Every student could utilise a computer or notebook especially at university! In fact everyone I know has some form of notebook or computer!
Don't always go for the cheapest, ideally go for one at the top of your price range, this will give you a well spec'd device.
The latest operating system is Microsoft Vista, this is probably best for the average student.
Be sure to find the best laptop that suits your needs.

Don't forget a case!
Secondhand is always an option.
If you loose your work, you will not get any time to re-do it! Make sure you have plenty of back-ups of any important work!
Its now cheap to back-up data, the simplest is to use CD's!
Alternatively use a portable hard drive, (See Below for best deals).
